NBA fanatics may be familiar with the term
ubuntu which was the battle cry for the 2008 champion Boston Celtics team. It emphasized the importance of team chemistry - "I am because we are", as they say- and was clearly the defining factor throughout the season and playoffs en route to a decisive win against Kobe and the Lakers.
Sadly, injuries yanked them out of contention in the semi-final round against Orlando this year. But they showed
ubuntu till the end, never giving up, exiting gloriously.

I have considered Windows to be a costly and high-maintenance operating system (OS). I base this from my experience with Windows XP - a fresh install usually gives a user the basics. However, the absence of a native antivirus is immediately brought to the attention of the user. In addition to this, a number of software to execute tasks (Photoshop, Microsoft Office) are absent, thus prompting the user to buy or to illegally download cracked versions of the applications needed. Furthermore, periodic maintenance tasks need to be done, such as disk defragmenting.
Companies usually introduce a product to the market by making its initial cost lower than that of the leading brand. In some cases, free alternatives for the gold standard in the market today are also available. Of course, this means that paying for less or none at all has its certain drawbacks as well.
Ubuntu is a Linux OS that gave me first hand experience in using a free system. It can be downloaded/requested
here for free. I got mine two weeks after I ordered a DVD of its newest release - 9.04 or the Jaunty Jackalope. Sweet.
Ubuntu Jaunty has liberated me from having to secure a good anti-virus application. - as Linux, as of now, is virtually virus free. Sure there are free anti-virus modules available in the net, but they don't cover all bases (in fact, no antivirus application is perfect). Apart from this, it allowed me to explore free and open source alternatives to commonly used applications. Open Office can't beat the wonderful presentations and graphics bundled with Microsoft Word, but it does save you money.
Some of the software users are accustomed to using either still have compatibility issues or do not have a means of functioning in Ubuntu. Furthermore, the dependence of Ubuntu in the Terminal (similar to the Command Prompt) as a means of updating and customizing it turns off a lot of people.
I must admit, you really would not 'get' how Ubuntu works right from the bat. A couple of
readings as well as browsing their
forums is a must for every new person. Hardware incompatibilities exist, and these sentiments are shared by a number of users worldwide. Solutions usually are proposed and accepted, but not everything works for every user.
Personally, the non-existence of viruses and the thrill of learning something new from scratch (I really am not a computer fanatic) are the only reasons that mattered to me the most when I made the switch. I'm sticking with it until you have to pay a single centavo for its acquisition.
Which would never happen. Ever.
